OGBARU ROAD

Federal Government of Nigeria Assumes Responsibility For Ogbaru Road
Sample letter to the State Governor

A  Political Road

Following petitions  and  longstanding  representations  made by  well meaning
Ogbaruans,  including,   notably  Chief  C. Obi  Olisa,  Representative  Okwudili
Uzoka (PDP-Ogbaru), Prof. Ben Nwabueze and Prof. Ben Akpati to the Anambra
State Government and the Federal Government respectively, and more recently
to Chief Anthony Anenih, the Federal Minister  for  Works and  Housing,  it was
disclosed last month that  the Federal Government has decided to upgrade the
Ogabru road from  the Onitsha  through Odekpe to Ndoni in the Rivers State to
a  "Trunk A"  road.   It is  further  understood  that  the  Minister  Anenih   has
signed  the  relevant  paper  effecting  the  change. What  is  now left are the
modalities and an assessment of what it  would  take to  reconstruct  the road
as well   as awarding   the   contract for it. A Ministry of Works Survey team is
to   undertake  a  tour  of  the  road  within  the next few weeks. Howevr, the
timing for the award of contract  and  completion  of  the  road  upgrade is still
indefinite.

By assuming responsibility  of  the  Ogbaru   road, the Federal Government has
added  another  axis  to  the  three  existing   federal road network connecting
south-south area to  oil rich  Delta region to  the  southeast  and  up  country.
These include the  Patani-Port-Harcourt road,  Owerri-Aba- Port-Harcourt road
and the new Abuja-Port-Harcourt road presently under construction.

Anambra  State  Governor,  Dr. Chinwoke  Mbadinuju who was  evidently very
delighted by  this  recent  development  visited  Ogbaru  on  15  April  2000 to
assess, among other things the present  condition of this very important road,
