PRESS RELEASE
(As Nigeria Marks 42 Independence Anniversary)
 |
|
Governor
James E. McGreevey of
New Jersey is set to make
history again. Come 9a.m. on
September 28, 2002, he will
single-handedly launch a new era
in Nigeria-US Relations by
hosting the burgeoning Nigerian community in
the New Jersey Tri-State area. The event tagged
Nigerian National Flag Raising Dayhas as its highlight
the raising of the Nigerian National Flag in the
Governor's Princeton New Jersey Mansion, Drumth Wacket,
where it will fly proudly for a week. This is a first for
Nigeria and Nigerians by all accounts. |
Jointly organized by the
Nigerian Community in New Jersey (under the auspices of The
Committee for the Nigerian National Flag Day in New
Jersey) in conjunction with the Governor's
Office as part of the extended celebration of
Nigeria's 42nd Independence Anniversary,
Nigerians in the Tri-State area and beyond
are enjoined to attend the ceremony that
will also feature multi-cultural dances,
exciting music and speeches by dignitaries such as government
representatives, members of the Diplomatic Corps and high
level traditional rulers.
The Flag Raising by Governor McGreevey is a recognition of the
progressive relationship that exists between the state of New
Jersey and the Nigerian family in America. It will further
facilitate the advancement of the people of New Jersey and the
multi-ethnic communities that have made the state their home.
The National Flag is an important symbol of a country. It
represents the
union of the people and is a particularly significant rallying
point for
an immigrant community. Nigeria's Green and White symbolize peace
and
agriculture, an indication of the Nigerian aspiration to find
peace and
self-sufficiency.
Nigeria is the most
populous and arguably the most important black nation
in the world. The country has had a checkered history, one full of
challenges ? but Nigeria is slowly rising from the ashes of the
past to
take on a new existence.
Pre-registration is
required of the Nigerian community, members of the
public and organizations wishing to attend this free epoch-making
