Every Ogbaru name has a meaning and context. There are three forms of names.  A given of first name, the last of family name and a salutation name. The latter is mainly reserved for elders and could be derived from a traditional title held by an individual. The salutation name of “afa ekene” derived its essence from cultural values, which stress respect for elders.  Whereas a child or a younger person may not call his or her parents or for that matter any elder by their first names, using their salutation name becomes the acceptable vehicle.  The salutation name also may be used to convey to strangers the accomplishment of the individual being saluted. Hence, an accomplished hunter may be called “Ogbu agu” or “Ogbu enyi”. An Ozo titleholder might be called “ogbu efi” or “eze ozo”. Amongst women, an accomplished wife might be called “eziogoli”; someone close to the husband might be called “uche dia” or “omalu uche” and a woman deemed lucky, can be called “nwa chinemelu”  or “oli  aku”. She who control the wealth and house hold is called “odiziaku”, while she who is deemed first amongst princesses is called “nwaezekaibie”

Aside from these variations of salutation names, first names convey meanings and many derive their pedigree from ancestral recollection and the belief in reincarnation. Hence, those born after a death in a family are called “Ogugua” or “Onochie” and those born after a long try for a child are called “uche nna” or “uche chukwu”.  And those believed to be spirit childen who have decided to stay, are called either “abiagom” or Nwanodu”. Every Ogbaru name has a meaning. Here are some an their interpretations which may be several for one name.
