OGBARU
FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY REPRESENTATIVE
|
Hon.
Okwudili Uzoka (Ojiba) the representative of Ogbaru Federal Constituency
in the National Assembly and Chairman, House Committee on Solid Minerals
won a landslide reelection in the just concluded 12 April legislative
elections. From a field of eighteen (18) candidates and parties that
received votes in the election, Hon. Uzoka received 21,365 votes to beat
out the competitors and enable PDP to retain its claim to Ogbaru. Of the
26,823 total valid votes cast in the Ogbaru Federal Constituency,
PDP won 21,365 or 79.65% followed by APGA’s 2,614 or
9.75%, ANPP’s 1,117 or 4.16% and AD’s 1,116 or 4.16%. PDP also 66.405% of
all the votes cast in Anambra State legislative election.

By being
reelected, Hon. Uzoka is likely to retain his Chairmanship of the
House Committee on Solid Minerals but will certainly move up in the House
seniority list. Alreday, there are speculations that with his seniority
within the PDP House caucus, Hon. Uzoka might seek that Chairmanship of
the House Committee on Industries or alternatively, the Chairmanship of
the all- important House Committee on Transportation that oversee works on
Nigeria Federal Roads. The latter would be an important development for
Ogbaru, given the poor condition of Ogbaru roads. Hon. Uzoka has been a
strong advocate for Federal Government intervention to solve the problems
confronting industries in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. |

Hon.
Uzoka’s reelection was not without the usual drama associated with
Nigerian politics. Sectional interests and economic powers in the Okpoko
area of Ogbaru LGA, hoping to capitalize on the groundswell popularity of
the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), sought to impose a non-Ogbaru
indigene, Mr. Zeribe Ezeanuna on Ogbaruans as their candidate.
Mr. Ezeanuna was neither resident in Okpoko or Nigeria. Instead he was
resident in America. But with the timely intervention of some well meaning
Ogbaruans, in Nigeria and the US, the APGA hierarchy decided to withdraw
their nomination of the candidate. This was partly out of the
understanding of the problems Ogbaruans had faced in the just concluding
term with a non-Ogbaruan and AD candidate being the Chairman of the Ogbaru
Local Government Area.
Reportedly, it took the intervention of APGA presidential candidate, Dim
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, whose mother is an Ogbaruan from Ogbakuba and
the APGA gubernatorial candidate in Anambra, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi to
influence the late replacement of Mr. Ezeanuna on the APGA ticket. The
decision, which proved controversial, however ensured that all those who
joined Hon. Uzoka in vying to represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency were
Ogbaruans. APGA, belatedly fielded Chinyelugo A. C. Obaze of Umuodu as its
candidate while the ANPP fielded one Mr. F. Oppiah.
Hon.
Uzoka returns to the House and the service of Ogbaru people with high
credentials, and history of long service, having been a captain of
industry in his years at Paterson and Zucchinis (PZ), before entering into
partisan politics. Hon. Uzoka is from Atani in Ogbaru LGA.
