The Secretary General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Professor Ben Nwabueze, has described the recently (March 2003)  concluded presidential debate in the country as a mere political camouflage aimed at further deceiving Nigerians.

Nwabueze made the statement weekend at the first Ohanaeze Lagos State Unity rally held at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, Badagry Expressway, Lagos. He said the idea of emulating the American political system of presidential debate was nonsense when it was clear that the best political party manifestos in Nigeria does not win an election except through unconstitutional manipulations. "The results of the elections have long been concluded. We are only waiting for the formality sake," Nwabueze said.

He called on the Igbo not to allow themselves to be used and dumped for the advancement of one's political ambition at the detriment of your course. "Cast your votes to any Igbo presidential candidates and let us go to the negotiation table. I am convinced that none of them will win outrightly the required 24 states at ago.

"The Igbo presidency is still on course, don't lose hope," he said however, warned the Igbo against divisionism and back biting amongst one another. "Keep away from violence that could cause breach of peace."

Nwabueze used the occasion to formally introduce the newly appointed state Deputy President of Ohanaeze, Chief Okafor, to the people resident in Lagos to enhance effective co-ordination. He pleaded to Ndigbo to assist Okafor to carry the burden.
